Alia Vera, Assoc. AIA

(She/Her/Hers)

Boulder Associates

With our initiatives of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, AIACV wanted to get to know Alia a little more and wanted to ask her some questions to get to know her a little better and get her thoughts on Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI).

What inspired you to go into the profession?

As a child in Peru, I observed the different trades of my father and uncles that varied from electrician, amateur builder to technical draftsman. All those trades were intriguing to me.  I loved watching them work putting things together and then I tried imitating them.  I went from fixing lamps and fuses to drawing with my Dad’s fancy rulers and pens.  It wasn’t till I moved to this country when I figured out that the combination of my interests and creativity lead to Architecture.

What identities do you hold that are important to you?

Being a female & Latina as a first-generation immigrant in this country are the core of my persona.

Why does representation matter for you?

It is uplifting to see someone like you as a mentor and at a leadership position.  It’s like affirming you that you also have the same opportunity.

Why is EDI important to you in the profession?

Equity, Diversity & Inclusion is important to me in the Architecture Profession because it would highly benefit from people from all walks of life.  People who feel that they belong and are even celebrated by their uniqueness are more creative, empowered, and productive.

About the #I Am Campaign

To continue with the goals of creating a more equitable, diverse, and inclusive Chapter, the AIACV started an empowering campaign focused on the narratives of people in our profession: #I Am.  Visibility and representation are important and the AIACV wants to acknowledge that.  Each individual holds different identities that aren’t seen or celebrated in society.  Diversity is an action where we all have a part in creating an environment where people feel seen, heard, and included.  In this #I Am campaign, we asked our participants to share their stories and get their thoughts on Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in the profession of architecture.  If you are interested in sharing your story and thoughts on Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, feel free to contact us at [email protected].
