Congratulations to John Liang, the first receipient of the John Ellis Architectural Scholarship! John is a recent Franklin High School graduate and plans to attend UCLA in the fall. His academic achievements include Pricipal’s Honor Roll & the President’s Award.
When asked why he wants to become an architect, he replied: Serving at Sacramento Loaves and Fishes has motivated my educational and career goals as an architect. Witnessing urban poverty inspires me to engage the underlying problems in society, studying their root causes. As a future architect, I seek to find out how cities respond to poverty, and how the planning, architecture, and incentives that the government creates either promote or obstruct restoration in the urban world and beyond. To address larger scale dilemmas such as urban poverty in the future, I aim to integrate societal problems into my work: alleviating inequality and creating a positive community culture through city planning and building design. I aim to provide both a voice for our community and an impact for the future by pursuing a career in architectural design. The cities in America need transformation, and I want to be a part of the change.

This scholarship was established to provide financial assistance to students pursuing a major in architecture.
