2022 John Ellis / AIA Scholarship Recipient: Kaiya Batkin

Congratulations to Kaiya Batkin, 2022 recipient of the John Ellis Architectural Scholarship, with matching grant funds from National AIA.

Kaiya plans to attend Cal Poly San Luis Obispo for City and Regional Planning in the Fall of 2022.

When asked why she wants to become an architect, she replied:

“I have always had trouble balancing the logical side and creative side of my brain. But when I attended a three-week summer architecture course through Cal Poly, I knew I had finally found the balance. The logical side would be required for things to make sense within codes and guidelines while the creative side could put something forth new and unique. These designs and plans would be applied to communities; to the people. I want to work with people to design things for their benefit and architecture, regardless of the branch, is all about the people.“

The AIA Central Valley/John Ellis Architectural Scholarship was established in 2018 by the American Institute of Architects, Central Valley Chapter, in recognition of Mr. Ellis’s significant service to the profession of architecture, through his support and involvement with the Chapter and as a professor of architecture at Cosumnes River College spanning 34 years. This scholarship was established to provide financial assistance to students pursuing a major in architecture. Matching funds have been provided by AIA National.
