Congratulations to Arlan Elijah Tiglao, 2023 recipient of the John Ellis Architectural Scholarship, with matching grant funds from National AIA.
Arlan is a recent graduate of Folsom High School and is planning to major in Architecture as he pursues a Bachelor’s degree.
When asked why he wants to become an architect, he replied:
“In sophomore year, I discovered that my school had finished constructing a new building for its CTE program. Seeing that the program taught many different trades, I became interested in what the building could offer. I made the decision to enroll in its architecture program for my junior year. I had always been interested in architecture but wasn’t certain if I wanted to pursue it as a career.
Beginning the class was exciting for me, I learned how to use CAD programs like Revit, Sketchup, Autocad, and Lumion with the help of my teacher and classmates. I developed skills in carpentry, drafting, drawing, and CAD, which allowed me to express my architectural ideas through different mediums. I completed a number of projects: I created physical models, designed a library, completed sets of construction documents, and built a shed. My interest in Architecture continued to grow as I completed my projects; knowing that I could plan, design, and physically construct things gave me a sense of fulfillment.
Wanting to build upon this sense of fulfillment and take my interests further, I joined my program’s architecture club and became an officer. I helped organize and design projects that we submitted to numerous architectural competitions. Through these competitions, I learned more about the design process and project management, which gave me insight into what a career in architecture would look like. I felt the same feeling of gratification participating in the club as I did completing my projects – I realized that architecture was the right path for me.
It was through the CTE building and its Architecture program that I fully realized my passion for architecture and the built environment. I was presented with the opportunity to explore my interests in these fields, and soon became completely engaged with them. By the end of my junior year, I made the decision to pursue an education in architecture.“
