2019 is your year to get licensed with AIA Central Valley & Black Spectacles!
How It Works
At the core of our program is the Black Spectacles ARE video series, a valuable set of video tutorials that cover each section of the ARE exam. We pair the video tutorials with recently licensed emerging professional architects and established “sage” architects in our community to provide prospective and real life application. Structure your preparation through attendance at our weekly sessions, attended by local ARE candidates just like you. We provide the space, snacks and motivation to get you licensed!
Already licensed or know a licensed architect? Volunteer as an EP or Sage teacher to lead our associates to licensure! More info at www.aiacv.org/are-sherpas
In 2019, we will hold three sessions throughout the year, each covering two ARE 5.0 exam divisions. Classes meet Saturday mornings to watch video tutorials and discuss content. The class schedule is subject to change.

How It Came Together
AIACV ARE Prep Courses
Christopher Holt, AIA led the effort that resulted in AIA Central Valley becoming the first local Chapter to obtain a component license to show ARE Prep Black Spectacles video courses at the local level in a group setting. Our weekend group sessions include two teachers: a sage mentor (licensed more than 10 years) and an emerging professional (licensed less than 10 years, ideally tested in the last 5 years).
Students watch the Black Spectacles videos and receive guidance from both local sage architects and emerging professionals who have recently taken the exams. This format further drives their understanding of the material and provides support and motivation to stay the course and pass the exam.
AIA Central Valley
AIA Central Valley is the local chapter of The American Institute of Architects. Our mission is to demonstrate and promote the value and contribution of AIA architects.
The Chapter provides numerous resources and activities for our Emerging Professionals (associates working towards licensure as well as licensed architects 10 years or less). Events include Firm Tours, So You Want To Be An Architect, Speed Mentor Match, BIG ASSociation Party, and Architecture Matters Design Forum Series.

Black Spectacles
After seeing his colleagues and students struggling to find resources to support their interest in learning design software, Marc Teer founded Black Spectacles, bringing together architects and designers to lend their professional expertise in design software, so that architects can learn the tools and work flows necessary to develop design work at the highest level.

Meuy Saechao, Assoc. AIA – past student 2018
“The sessions had an abundance of insight on how to prepare for the NCARB exams. Not knowing what to expect on the new 5.0 format and where to begin is overwhelming for a newcomer! It included great resources with hands-on/live local AIA architects who were able to share their fundamental experiences and knowledge to guide and inspire me.”
Kevin Young, AIA – licensed in 2018, student 2016-2018
“Each class provided invaluable insight into understanding the topics by providing concrete real life examples from the instructor’s own experiences, expanding understanding of the study material. You would be hard-pressed to find a resource that provides this type of support!”
Jake Elliott, AIA – licensed in 2018, student 2017, EP instructor 2019
“The 3-tiered approach provides candidates with a unique teaching/learning experience. These classes were critical for me because I could always count on help with study content questions and had a support network.”
