Program Description: Presentation and discussion of the recent changes in the AIA A201 – General Conditions, B101 and B103 – Owner-Architect Agreements, and other related documents, followed by Q&A.
Learning Objectives:
- Discuss the history, content, structure and applications of AIA documents, including the revision process.
- Assess the conventional family and understand significant revisions made to A201 and other documents, including Owner-Architect and Owner
- Describe how the Insurance and Bonds Exhibit facilitates discussion on how bonds and insurance can and should be utilized to mitigate risk for all projects participants.
- Recognize how the Sustainable Projects Exhibits and Sustainable Projects Guide facilitate construction of buildings that can have a positive impact on the health, safety and welfare of building occupants.

Don Mariano, AIA, CSI, CCS
As a Principal at Lionakis, Don Mariano brings more than 33 years of experience in architecture. He is responsible for guiding the direction of the firm, implementing quality control standards, and providing technical expertise on various projects. Don has extensive experience in project management, quality control, and construction administration for a wide variety of healthcare, government, education, and commercial projects. He has administered contracts for hundreds of projects and written specifications for many more. He currently serves on the national AIA Contract Documents Committee and chairs the B-Series Task Group.
Sheryl Dodd-Hansen, FCSI, CCS, CCCA, SCIP, Associate AIA
Sheryl is a Principal with the Dodd-Hansen Consulting Group who specializes in Bidding and Contracting Requirements and Division 01 – General Requirements. She is a Past President of the Sacramento Chapter of CSI and has served as Vice President and Secretary of the Institute. She is a past national President of Specifications Consultants in Independent Practice (SCIP). Sheryl currently is an Adjunct Professor in the Civil Engineering Department at the University of New Mexico. In updating her online course “Principles of Written Construction Documents” she has spent considerable time this year reviewing the 2017 A201 – General Conditions for the Contract for Construction.
John Broghammer, Esq. Partner, Sims, Lawrence & Arruti
John is an attorney specializing in the representation of design professionals. He completed both his undergraduate and legal education at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska, graduating with honors at both levels. Following admission to the California Bar in 1990, his practice area has focused on Civil Litigation with a particular emphasis on the representation of architects and engineers in Construction Defect Litigation and the defense of public entities and corporations in landslide and flood claims. John advises and counsels design professionals in all aspects of contract preparation, risk allocation and insurance issues. He regularly lectures and writes on these items and how design professionals can work to effectively represent their clients while protecting their own interests for risk allocation, construction defect claims and contract disputes.
