The American Institute of Architects, Central Valley Chapter, in partnership with the City of Sacramento Community Development Department, announce the 2021 Emerging Professional’s Design Competition: “Housing on the Edge” – A Prototype for Low Income Work Force Family Housing.
With decreasing availability of housing stock and the ever-increasing cost of rent and living within the Sacramento region, we are continuing to struggle to meet our housing demands. This housing crisis is felt more strongly among our most vulnerable communities, including low-and middle-income families and communities of color, who continue to be displaced by gentrification, a lack of housing options, and other factors.
The 2021 competition focuses on designing a cutting-edge, environmentally sustainable, self-sustaining and scalable affordable housing prototype–which can be built on the edge of school playing fields or other publicly owned land. The competition will be used as a pilot project to demonstrate how “Missing Middle Housing” could be returned to our traditional neighborhood inventory.
