At the heart of the civic center in Redding, CA, the 167,000 square foot Shasta County, New Redding Courthouse will hold judicial functions and services for county residents. The architecture is a celebration of citizen engagement in the justice system. The new building will be a symbol of justice and civility; its design is of the people, time, and place in which it exists.
Highlighted by the light-filled jury assembly space flanking the main entry pavilion with tall vertical glass and warm copper tones, the public face of the courthouse signifies a heightened respect for the civic functions within. The architectural expression includes a series of solid and transparent bars, where zones of public involvement are elevated with daylight and views, and bracketed with the sense of permanence and order expressed in precast concrete. The vertical metal panels on the façade bring the rich, earth-toned color of the county’s soil into the building.
Public spaces at the ground floor are designed to be welcoming and light-filled. At the heart of the project are 14 courtrooms within the tower on levels two through six. All public courtroom waiting spaces have ample daylight with views to the western foothills.
Traditional architectural elements of the courthouse vernacular are powerfully symbolized with a modern reinterpretation throughout. Weaving these elements into the experience heightens the sense of respect, dignity, and presence that a modern courthouse deserves.
