Building Performance Standards For Existing Buildings

June 13, 2022 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Join the Chapter and presenter Erin Mcdade as we explore BPS (Building Performance Standards).

The built environment generates nearly 50% of annual global CO2 emissions, and approximately 2/3 of the global building area that exists today will still exist in 2040, the year by which we need to achieve zero global carbon emissions. Without widespread existing building decarbonization across the globe, these buildings will still be emitting CO2 emissions in 2040.

Achieving zero emissions from the existing building stock will require leveraging Building Performance Standards (BPS) and building intervention points to accelerate the rate of energy upgrades (increasing energy efficiency, eliminating on-site fossil fuels, and generating and/or procuring 100% renewable energy). Understand the role of BPS in comprehensive building decarbonization policies, the growing momentum for establishing BPS across the country, and the BPS policy precedents we can learn from.

Erin McDade is Architecture 2030’s Senior Program Director. She leads Architecture 2030’s public policy and building reuse initiatives, focusing on developing data-driven solutions for building sector decarbonization. Erin studied architecture as an undergraduate at Smith College and holds a Master’s Degree in Architecture from the University of Washington, where she focused on the intersection of buildings and the environment.
