Sexual Assault is one of the most violating traumas an individual can experience. Survivors are left with profound and long-lasting physical, emotional, mental, and social repercussions. Due to the unique physical, emotional, clinical and judicial considerations of emergency sexual assault treatment – both for survivor and caregiver – specialized facilities designed exclusively to serve their needs are warranted.
This webinar will explore the approach proposed in the April 2022 Healthcare Design Magazine, “Specialty Care: Comfort Zone” where we looked to Trauma Informed Design to create a dedicated sexual assault response facility (SARF) suite specifically for the survivors of sexual assault. In an effort to raise awareness and inspire more evidential research, we will share our findings and Trauma Informed Design principles for the design of SARF to create a supportive, evidence-based suite that provides for the operational and emotional needs of the survivor and staff alike.
Learning Objectives:
1. Develop an understanding of what Trauma Informed Design is and how it differs from and supports Trauma Informed Care.
2. Review the concepts of what a Sexual Assault Response Facility (SARF) is and how it relates the Emergency Department.
3. Develop an understanding of the special needs of sexual assault survivors and the design approaches specific to this patient population.
4. Develop an understanding of critical planning and design best-practices to maximize the supportive survivor experience and patient/staff flows.
