#I Am
Mike Parrott, AIA
(He/Him/His)
Nacht & Lewis
With our initiatives of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, AIACV wanted to get to know Mike a little more and wanted to ask him some questions to get to know him a little better and get his thoughts on Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI).
What inspired you to go into the profession?
I was inspired at a young age to become an architect as I grew up working alongside my grandpa and father in a family-owned construction business. I enjoyed building and understanding how things went together, but eventually I aspired to make a positive impact on our environment through design. I value the creative process of exploring ideas and working together to find a holistic solution.
Why does representation matter for you?
A diverse group of people who listen and contribute with empathy create the best ideas and outcomes. Since empathy requires an acknowledgement that equity is not always a given, we must adapt to empower everyone who wants to participate in the process.
Why is EDI important to you in the profession?
Ultimately, I want to have a beneficial impact on the built environment and on those who live around me. To do this requires engaging with diverse perspectives and adapting to the needs of others. Because of my willingness to learn something different (and hopefully better), I try to change my limited view and consequently improve design in my community.
About the #I Am Campaign
To continue with the goals of creating a more equitable, diverse, and inclusive Chapter, the AIACV started an empowering campaign focused on the narratives of people in our profession: #I Am. Visibility and representation are important and the AIACV wants to acknowledge that. Each individual holds different identities that aren’t seen or celebrated in society. Diversity is an action where we all have a part in creating an environment where people feel seen, heard, and included. In this #I Am campaign, we asked our participants to share their stories and get their thoughts on Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in the profession of architecture. See all the published #I Am’s on the EDI webpage.
