John Ellis Architectural Scholarship

APPLY FOR THE SCHOLARSHIP

Applications for the AIA Central Valley/John Ellis Architectural Scholarship typically open in December prior to award year, and close in early March. Check the Sacramento Region Community Foundation {https://sacregcf.academicworks.com/opportunities/962} to see details.

This scholarship was established in 2018 by the American Institute of Architects, Central Valley Chapter, in recognition of Mr. Ellis’s significant service to the profession of architecture, through his support and involvement with the Chapter and as a professor of architecture at Cosumnes River College spanning 34 years. This scholarship was established to provide financial assistance to students pursuing a major in architecture.

  • Be a high school senior, undergraduate college student, graduate student or an adult re-entry student
  • Must be majoring in architecture at a Community College or Four-Year College/University in the fall
  • Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale
  • Have attended or currently attending a school in the following counties: Alpine, Amador, Butte, Colusa, El Dorado, Glenn, Lassen, Nevada, Placer, Plumas, Sacramento, Shasta, Sierra, Sutter, Tehama, Yolo and Yuba
  • Full time enrollment in 12 units or more is required during the academic year
  • Preference will go to students attending a Community College

Additional Requirements

  • Essay: What in your family or life story, up to this point, has influenced or inspired you to want to study architecture?
  • Two letters of recommendation from a current or past teacher, advisor or mentor

ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIP

The AIA Central Valley Chapter’s Emerging Professionals have established this perpetual endowed scholarship in honor of longtime (and alive and well!) member John Ellis, AIA.

The scholarship is managed by the Sacramento Region Community Foundation and is in recognition of John’s significant service to the profession of architecture–both through his involvement with the Chapter, and for his noteworthy contribution as a  professor of architecture at Cosumnes River College, a position from which he retired after 34 years in 2016.

In 2018, we reached our goal to raise $25,500.00 which enabled us to establish a perpetual endowed scholarship to assist students engaged in architectural studies. The fund will provide an annual scholarship of at least $500 per year for students at either a community college or university, starting in 2019.

A scholarship in John’s name, available to students within the Chapter’s 17 county boundary, is a wonderful way to support the profession in our region, and to shape the education of our future architects. Please consider donating to the scholarship fund so that we may increase our award, or provide additional scholarships: https://ssl.charityweb.net/sacregcf/

Contact the Chapter office for details or questions: 916-444-3658 or [email protected]

Many thanks to the generous donors who made this scholarship a reality!
