Need ADA Credits?

AIACV will offer 2 ADA IN A DAY courses in 2020:

  • Thursday, March 5th: 2019 CBC Accessibility Update with CalCasp
  • Thursday, August 6th: Healthcare Accessibility with Bill Zellmer, AIA

Attendees taking either of the scheduled AIACV Accessibility & Codes courses will receive a total of 5 ADA credits to meet their licensing requirement. AIA members will receive 5 Health Safety Welfare (HSW). Beverages and Continental Breakfast will be served. Seminars will break for a half-hour lunch. Attendees may bring a brown-bag lunch and stay on-site, or leave and return.


ADA IN A DAY #1: 2019 CBC Accessibility Update

The class will focus on the areas of the 2019 California Building Code Chapter 11B which are most commonly misunderstood and/or misapplied. The importance of NOT designing or constructing required accessible element to the minimum or maximums and the consequences if you do, will be explored. Ample time will be provided to discuss real time issues faced by the class attendees and how to mitigate them.

Learning objectives:
– Understand the differences between State & Federal accessibility regulations, standards & codes
– Understand the history of State & Federal accessibility regulations, standards & codes
– Understand Scoping as it relates to the broad application of all accessibility regulations, standards & codes
– Learn the concepts and the why behind the standards, regulations & codes.

TIME: Door opens at 8:30 am, class begins at 9:00 am and runs until approximately 2:30 pm

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTORS:
Mark Wood, CASp and Paul Klein, CASp have been responsible for ensuring compliance with California accessibility requirements found in the California Building Code Title 24 and American With Disabilities Act for over 20 years. They own and operate California Certified Accessibility Specialists, (CalCasp) offering a full range of accessibility compliance services to assist businesses, property owners and architects in complying with Senate Bill 1608 and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).


ADA IN A DAY #2: Healthcare Accessibility with Bill Zellmer, AIA, CASp

Date: Thursday, August 6th, 2020, 9am – 3pm

NOW VIRTUAL – We know 5 hours is a long time for a virtual accessibility seminar, but we’re committed to getting you your mandatory accessibility continuing education in one go! We’ll have scheduled breaks and a hour lunchtime. Feel free to also step out if you need an additional breather.

This seminar will present case studies as vehicles for demonstrating practical application of accessibility in healthcare facilities. The seminar will make an abundant use of floor plans and photographs to clarify the code requirements as they specifically relate to healthcare facilities (both OSHPD and non-OSHPD application).

In focused segments throughout the day, in-depth code analysis will be presented to explain the concepts that are being applied in the case studies.

Learning objectives:

· Understanding Sections 11B-223 and 11B-805 of the CBC; relating specifically to healthcare facilities

· Developing a practical understanding of ‘Path of Travel’ requirements

· Understanding the Obligations of Barrier Removal work

· Understanding Clearance Requirements in Patient Treatment Areas

Instructor: Bill Zellmer, AIA, CASp is Sutter Health’s in-house Accessibility Expert. His experience includes: Architect: 1987-2020; OSHPD: 1995-2009; Certified Access Specialist: 2010-2020; Accessibility Field Surveys: 2010-2020; Sutter Health Accessibility Expert: 2014-2020.
