President’s Message – Kicking off 2024: The Importance of Mentorship and Education

By Cody Carpino, AIA

AIA Central Valley is one of the busiest and most engaging chapters in the state of California and we have a huge year ahead!  On January 11th, we convened for our annual retreat with the 2024 Board of Directors, Past Presidents of the Chapter, committee representatives, and a few other distinguished individuals in our region.  It was a time to reflect on 2023 and a time to discuss our goals and priorities for 2024.  A big thank you to One Workplace for hosting our retreat with 40+ people in attendance!

We have many goals this year, but one priority is an update to our Strategic Plan which is on a 5-year cycle – it will be rooted in the principles of inclusivity, sustainability, education, and excellence.  With the assistance of many generous volunteers, current Vice President Melisa Gaudreau, AIA of Page + Turnbull will be leading this effort.  Secondly, the AIACV Board of Directors just approved a refresh of the popular Experience Architecture program.  Past President Chris Holt, AIA of Dreyfuss + Blackford helped drive this conversation in 2023 with a focused Experience Architecture Strategic Plan – more info on this in the coming months.

Each board president has a set of annual goals they wish to accomplish.  Mine are reemphasizing what we are all meant to do anyway and that is instilling the goals of mentorship, coaching, and education in cultivating a culture of continuous learning and growth.  The Emerging Professionals committee will continue organizing impactful educational events including our third ‘Celebration of the Profession’ which honors newly licensed architects every two years.  Acquiring a license in architecture is a monumental achievement and is one to be celebrated!  Also as co-chair of our Design Narrative committee, we will continue to provide inspiring architectural lectures throughout the year as well as look forward to the Monterey Design Conference this fall organized by AIA California.

For more information on upcoming events, tune into our weekly online NOTES newsletter.  I look forward to representing you all this year as the AIA Central Valley President.  Please feel free to reach out at any time – LET’S GO!

All My Best,

Cody Carpino, AIA
