Presented by the AIA Central Valley Civic Engagement Team’s Housing Task Force and CivicWell.
The strip was once the glue that held the post World War II suburban dream together, but no more. Once, the strip was where we cruised, but now we cruise online. Once, we could afford housing in neighborhoods where we wanted to live – but too often this is now an unattainable dream.
Building inward, rather than out – a concept long championed by CivicWell is now popular, but too much infill housing is unaffordable and it’s not happening at the scale needed. Peter Calthorpe, a founder of the Congress of New Urbanism, has studied the capacity of under-utilized commercial strips in California and has proposed we re-invent our aging and underutilized strip malls to quicken the pace of housing construction, without disrupting stable neighborhoods, and in a way that is both good for our environment and our economy.
Our region is crisscrossed with aging commercial strips ideally located in livable neighborhoods and we believe this gives us a great opportunity. At the planning level, our local governments have laid the groundwork. Now, it’s time to get the housing built.
Join us for a lively discussion with CivicWell, local government leaders, architects and other experts to find out how we can expedite the re-invention of our commercial strips to help solve our housing crisis.
